ETERNAL SECURITY - PART 1

What is eternal security and why is it important for us to understand? First, let us define our terms. Eternal means existing at all times; without end; always. Security means protected; safe. So, then, eternal security means always safe or saved. What exactly is it that we are always safe or saved from? Well, like it or not, the fact is that we are all born in sin, totally depraved (100% imperfect), and are destined to die in our sin, apart from God for all of eternity.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

God, on the other hand, is 100% righteous, has never sinned, and will never sin.

Psalm 18:30 “As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; …”
So, since the perfect God cannot have a relationship with sinful people, He created a solution. God, the Father, sent God, the son-The Lord Jesus Christ- to live as a human being. He lived a sinless life and then willingly bore the judgement for sin, died, and then was raised from the dead to overcome both sin and death. God’s own are saved from sin when He, in His grace, gives humility, the ability to understand depravity and the need to be saved, to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then to worship Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Then, and only then, are people able to live with Him as part of His happy family. This priceless Gift is offered by grace, which is completely undeserved.

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

It is important for believers to understand eternal security because God promises His children that He will always protect them from the “wages of sin” (spiritual death- eternal separation from God) and they will never lose this protection. God is all powerful (omnipotent) so He is more than able to save us and keep us saved, forever and ever. How can we be sure of all this? Well, the Bible tells us so and even explains, to some extent, how. First we are indwelled by the Trinity. Do you know what that means? Indwell means to be inside one’s body. The Trinity describes God, who is one God with 3 distinct persons.

Isaiah 44:6 “This is what the Lord says… ‘I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.’”

Luke 3:21-22 “When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’”

We know, this does not seem to add up, but stay with us. Ok, so God lives inside of us. Wait a minute, this also sounds impossible, right? Well, the Bible tells us in
Matthew 19:26 that the truth about salvation is impossible for man, but possible with God. So we must have faith and believe that what God says is true. Ok, so we are like peas in a pod with God.

John 14:20 “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”

When we are saved, our body becomes a temple for the Trinity to dwell in. In the Old Testament, the Jews had structures called the Tabernacle or temple and this was where God would make Himself available for His people to serve and worship Him. Though we may go to church now to learn about God, we have Him right inside of us. We can worship and serve Him with our very own bodies, wherever we are, by obeying His commands.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

For believers, God is as close to us as our very own bodies. What is awesome is that we will have this close relationship with Him forever and ever. We will never have to be apart from Him or face eternal punishment for sin, because He saved us and we are one with Him!

Romans 8:1Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

We know all if this is difficult to wrap your mind around. Do not worry, though, we have our whole life here on Earth and then all of eternity in Heaven to keep learning about God’s amazing truths. For now, we are able to believe the unbelievable because the Bible is the source of Truth. If you trust God, then you will trust that what He says is true. God will give us more and more faith as we keep reading our Bibles, praying, and obeying His commands.

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

ETERNAL SECURITY - PART 2

So far in our study on eternal security, we have learned that once God saves you from your sin through salvation in Jesus Christ, you are always saved. We also learned that God gives us glimpses in the Bible of how He accomplishes this. First, believers in Jesus Christ are indwelled by the Trinity- God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit actually live inside of us. This seems impossible, but remember what Jesus said about salvation…

Matthew 19:26 “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’

Ok, time to learn more! Each member of the Trinity has a specific role in our salvation. God, the Father, is the architect (the one who came up with plan); God, the Son (Jesus Christ), is the one who became a man and lived out the plan; God, the Holy Spirit, is the one who provided the power for the plan. Our eternal security is guaranteed by the baptism and sealing ministry of God, the Holy Spirit. What does that mean? Well, when God’s children are saved, they are to be baptized in water to identify with Jesus’ death (into the water), burial (under the water), and resurrection (out of the water). Before this physical baptism, though, God, Himself, baptizes us with His Spirit.
Acts 11:16 “And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’”

This baptism is the source of power for our identification and unity with Jesus Christ. This is like when a coach gives out uniforms to each member of a team. The members wear the uniforms not only to be easily identified but also to create unity and team spirit. So, at salvation, the Holy Spirit gives us a “uniform” for our team (Team Jesus Christ) through His baptism! So, not only are we in unity with God, but all other believers, as well!

Galatians 3:27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”

So, we are saved forever, indwelled (lived in) by the Trinity, and in union with both Jesus Christ and His family (go, Team Jesus!) though the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This is all guaranteed to the believer by the sealing ministry of God, the Holy Spirit. Sealing means to close up securely, like when you seal a sandwich bag or an envelope. The Holy Spirit is the seal, the guarantee of your eternal security.

Ephesians 4:30 “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

What could possibly be more permanent than God, the Holy Spirit, sealing your salvation? It is like super gluing the pages of a book together, locking it, like a diary, and then destroying the key- that book is shut forever! God is way stronger than locks or super glue, though, so if God wants something sealed, there is nothing that can break it, agree?

We are going to discuss one last really amazing way God ensures our eternal security. God adopts believers in Jesus Christ as His very own children! Yup, you read that right, those who are saved are literally a part of God’s family!

Ephesians 1:4-5 “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”

You know how in your own family that even if someone moves to a different house or town, they are still a part of your family? They do not just stop being a part of the family because you do not see them every day, right? Well, in the same way, once God adopts us, we will ALWAYS be both His child and family with all other believers- even those we have never met- again, wow!

This is all very exciting, right?! As you can now clearly see, both understanding and being grateful for eternal security is so very important for believers in Jesus Christ. God wants His children to have confidence in their salvation, to be free from the fear of death and eternity, and to trust in Him for both today and all of our tomorrows. Thank you, Lord, for saving us and keeping us saved!

1 John 5:11 “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
