RESURRECTION SUNDAY SPECIAL

What comes to mind when you think of Easter Sunday? Is it waking up to a basket full of candy or going on an Easter egg hunt or seeing the Easter bunny? What should we be thinking about on this holiday?

Mark 16:1-6 “When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?’ And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.”

You must have heard this day called Resurrection Sunday by people in church before, right? Why do we call it that instead of Easter? Well, today is the day set aside to remember and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is a pretty big word, do you know what it means? It means the revival or restoration of something. In this case, it is the revival or bringing back to life something/someone that was dead.

Jesus Christ, who is God the Son, became a man and then was judged for our sins and died on the cross. As the verses describe above, Jesus did not stay dead. Incredible, huh? Are you wondering WHY He was resurrected and what is so important about it? Well, keep reading…
First we need to remember that every single person was born a sinner. All we have to do is consider our thoughts from today alone and we can see that is true, right? None of us have perfect thoughts all day. Well, God does- every second of every day and His perfection cannot be around imperfection. There is a price to pay for sin and it is death, both physical and spiritual (separation from God).

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death…”

Jesus Christ willingly took on the judgment for our sins and died on the cross. The story does not end there because where would that leave us? Jesus was resurrected in order to completely pay the “wages of sin” and overcome death.

1 Corinthians 15:54-56 “…Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.”

Jesus was resurrected in order to prove that He was who He claimed to be- the Son of Man, a title for deity (being God).

Mark 8:31 “And he (Jesus) began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.”

Jesus was resurrected so believers would know, without a doubt, that though they will die physically- they, too, will be resurrected and live with Him forever in Heaven!

John 11:25-26 “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”

The resurrection of Jesus Christ proved to people that He was God, that He had fully paid the price for His children’s sins, and was victorious over sin and death. Once we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and accept this amazing gift of grace, we share in His victory!

1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

So, you see, we have much to celebrate today and it has nothing to do with bunnies and candy. There is so much to be thankful for and it has EVERYTHING to do with the fact that the Lord God, in His grace and love, provided the plan and the Savior for our salvation. Make sure you take the time to thank Him today for this amazing Truth- He more than deserves it!

Psalm 118:1 “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”
