For most people, getting out of bed in the morning is the start of their day. Get out on “the wrong side of the bed,” as they say, and you’re disheartened by the prospect of what lies ahead. When this happens, I have my worst days…days where I’m feeling particularly uninspired. It’s like a burden that weighs me down and, if I’m not careful, can result in a depressed mood. Thankfully, I have learned a strategy that, when abided by, works flawlessly every time. What I’ve learned is that getting out of bed inspired begins with perspective.

Sometimes the greatest battle we face throughout the day is the one we fight first thing in the morning. The prize is perspective. Learn to fight for proper perspective. Don’t allow bad dreams, looming to-dos, or remnants of the day before to steal your inspiration from you!

How do we win this battle when we still have sleep in our eyes? For starters, we abandon any aspirations our human flesh has of dominating our day. We recognize the false sense of immediacy our flesh proposes we pay attention to. We break our old habits - the ones that have proven themselves detrimental to our happiness. Instead, we begin our day by talking to the Lord, our best Friend. We say “good morning” to Him and we thank Him for another day to live and the opportunity to bring glory to Him. We pray to Him, not for religious reasons, but to fellowship with Him in a way that allows us to hear His precious voice. We ask Him for guidance, faith, humility, and purpose. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (James 1:5).

Fight for your perspective when you wake up in the morning (or whenever you wake up to start your day). The longer you wait, the more likely your flesh will capture your perspective and set your day off in the wrong direction.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
— Proverbs 19:21

We live in a world that specializes in packing our calendars chock-full of things to do. The problem is that these so-called innocuous “things”, when combined to comprise our day, can end up dominating us. That is our habit these days. We have enslaved ourselves in the name of progress. We have even developed high-tech devices that run software to assist us in this endeavor. Sure, we get a lot more done in a day, but to what end if we’re miserable? Look around; why are so many people hooked on coffee and energy drinks? Why do people still smoke, knowing the health hazards? Might we agree that it’s all to boost our energy to try to keep up with our packed schedules? Might we suppose these are coping mechanisms for misery?

Is there anything wrong with working hard, meeting deadlines, keeping a calendar for efficiency sake? Of course not:

For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
— 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12

There’s nothing wrong with leading a busy life, so, please don’t misunderstand my point here, which is to simply emphasize the importance of getting out of bed the right way. Each day, after all, is a day ordained by God. Our Lord and Savior has purchased us from the slave market of sin - this is His life we are living, for it is a grace gift to us, His children. We ought not allow our flesh, operating on the details of life, to set our perspective and therefore the direction and tone of our day. We need to fight off this tendency, throw out old habits, despising the temptation to consult our flesh before we even talk to God about our day.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
— Jeremiah 29:11-13

If you’re like me, the temptation to hop out of bed and begin tackling the details of life is strong just about every morning. However, with the right strategy (and I won’t lie, it’s taken time to develop in me) you’re able to overcome your weaknesses. If I can do it, so can you!

The plans of the heart belong to man,
but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes,
but the LORD weighs the spirit.
Commit your work to the LORD,
and your plans will be established.
The LORD has made everything for its purpose,
even the wicked for the day of trouble.
— Proverbs 16:1-4

Life is a gift; but, you must have the right perspective to realize this. I love to hear people say, “Life is good” when asked how they are doing. If it’s genuine, I know they have been talking to God, most likely before they even got out of bed. God has a purpose for all of us, which is truly inspiring to know. We have to fight to keep this perspective, for it makes all the difference - this is our winning strategy.

The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;
your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.
Do not forsake the work of your hands.
— Psalm 138:8

Love in Christ,
