TODAY’S VERSE:
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
As we continue our study on salvation in prep school, we turn our focus on what exactly it is that believers in Jesus Christ are saved from. As today’s verse tells us, we are saved from sin and the death resulting from it.
Here are some questions for you. Do all people need to be saved from sin? Are people born good? Do some stay good while others turn evil and need to be saved?
The answer to the questions above can be summed up in one word- depravity. Do you know what that means? Depravity means “wicked or morally corrupt”. Every single person alive was born depraved, from every cute little baby to every sweet old lady. So, yes, every person needs to be saved and, no, people are not born good, but, rather, in sin.
Romans 3:10-12 “As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one’.”
So, if we are all born depraved, why would God save us?
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Romans 5:6-8 “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God loves His children so He saved them by sending His son, Jesus Christ, who became a man and bore the judgement for our sin. We are all 100% helpless and hopeless to save ourselves.
Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
God saves us and He finished the work of salvation on the cross.
John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
In summary, every single person needs to be saved from sin and death. We are completely incapable of doing this ourselves. In humility, we must admit our hopelessness and helplessness, understanding that Jesus is the only way to salvation. He is our Lord and Savior. Once saved, we are to then live our lives for Him, in humble gratitude and obedience.
2 Corinthians 5:15 “And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.”
