TODAY'S VERSE:

Matthew 6:24a No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

In prep school we have started a study on Salvation. Salvation is defined as the process of saving or rescuing. What exactly are we being saved from? Well, the Bible says that we are all “slaves” to sin.

John 8:34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

What exactly is a slave? A slave is a person who is the legal property of and in complete subjection (under authority) to another. They are expected to serve and obey their master without question. It sounds awful to be a slave to sin, doesn’t it? Well, the Good News is that once you are born again and saved, you are no longer a slave to sin because you have been rescued and purchased by God.

1 Corinthians 6:20a For you have been bought with a price

Jesus Christ purchased us with His blood and we now belong to Him. So, we are now HIS slaves, expected to serve and obey Him.

Romans 6:16-19 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

What motivates us to obey and serve God? First of all, the Bible tell us to, but there is also another motivation:

John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commands.

We obey and serve God because we love Him. Why exactly do we love God? There are countless reasons to love our Creator, of course, but remember how the verses above told us that we were slaves to sin? Well, God loved us so much that He designed a plan to save us from that sin.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

So, how do we become slaves of God instead of sin?

Mark 1:15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Jesus Christ, the man who is also God the Son, bore the judgement for the sins of the world, died on the cross, and then was resurrected, overcoming death so that we may have life eternal with Him, our Lord and Savior.
